. mitt romney holds rallies in both ohio and iowa. and i want to take another look at those two polls that everyone is talking about this morning. they seem to paint different pictures of this race. the pew research center gives mitt romney a four-point lead over president obama. 49% to 45%. that survey did include more likely voters who identify themselves as republicans. however, the latest gallup tracking poll has president obama leading mitt romney 50% to 45%. this poll does include voters who were surveyed before the presidential debate which most voters say romney won though interestingly enough, it showed movement toward obama yesterday. all right. hard to keep track of. there's a lot going on here. cnn political reporter peter hamby joins us live from washington. please, peter, make sense of this for us. >> okay. these are the first two real credible polls we've seen since the debate. the bottom line here is there's movement in both toward mitt romney. you're right. the gallup poll had about three days of sampling before the debate that showed obama winning. after the debate,

and mitt romney both have a play list that, again, i think it is trying to give them the character or persona. mitt romney has johnny cash on his. obama has arcade fire. all these, like -- i was listening to them this morning and just sort of -- you read so much into it, what do they mean by that lyric? what are they trying to say? >> why are they choosing -- arcade fire. who exactly mentioned they must have a group in charge of social media, which would be a pretty awesome job if you're a youngster out of college, right, and tweeting on behalf of the president or mitt romney. is that who it is? >> yeah. mostly it is not the candidates posting. >> it is not? >> shocker. so there are people employed to do this. i think this came out of the 2008 campaign, you know, president obama had a lot of success reaching out particularly to young voters on text messages and social networks. you mentioned that was more twitter and facebook then and now spreading into these other networks too like tumbler or spotify. >> how successful, ultimately, as you mention that young voting bloc that is so

electoral college map, ohio. both presidential candidates will be there today. and look at this. romney's catching up dramatically. president obama's still ahead 51% to 47%. but his four-point lead falls now within the poll's sampling error. the president had a nine-point lead in our most recent poll of polls in ohio, which was completed just before last week's presidential debate in denver. our chief national correspondent john king is joining us from the state capital of columbus right now. john, you're taking a closer look at the new numbers in this ohio poll. what are you seeing? >> reporter: wolf, if you had any doubt the first debate gave governor romney a significant meaningful bounce, this erases them. we've seen it in the national polls. now we see it in our brand new poll here in ohio. you just mentioned the numbers. that's a statistical tie and a big comeback for governor romney for where he was pre-debate. look at with four weeks to go certain to be a hard-fought battleground. independents, the president up four points. that's within a margin of error. the suburbs, the cinci

hot there in greece. >>> president obama and mitt romney will both campaign in ohio today, key battleground states. two national polls show the race basically tied at this point, taken after the debate gives mitt romney a four-point lead over president obama, 49% to 45%. last month that same poll had romney trailing the president by eight points. there is good news from the president. latest gallup tracking poll has him leading romney by five points. some of that survey taken before the debate but a lot of it taken after. >>> starring big bird, produced after mitt romney declared he would cut funding for pbs during last week's debate. it is laced with sarcasm, casting the sesame street character as an evil corporate fiend. >> bernie madoff, ken lay, criminals, glutton of greed. and the evil genius who towered over them? one man has the guts to speak his name. >> big bird. big bird. big bird. >> it's me, big bird. >> a menace to our economy. mitt romney knows it's not wall street you have to worry about. it's sesame street. >> i am going to stop the subsidy to pbs. >> mitt romne

both before and after the debate and nationally in gallup's daily tracking poll which covers october 2nd through the 8th, mitt romney now holds a two point edge. today, gallup shifted from registered to likely voters, which tends to favor republicans. that said, though, it is hard to find any evidence, any evidence that president obama escaped denver without at least some damage. the only question being how severe and how long-lasting. that seems hard to dispute. just as it's hard to dispute that prior to the debate, mr. romney was getting hammered in the polls. keeping them honest though, disputing or downplaying the obvious, that's what campaigns do on both sides. >> it's not going to be about the polls. >> i wouldn't put a lot of weight in any of these national polls for the next cuouple days. >> in terms of mitt romney surging, just remember how much of a deficit he had to make up. he was in some cases double digits behind the president in all those attributes. >> pull back the reins. >> the media is focusing on one poll. >> that's reaction to the recent batch of polling, including

've said the position on iran for both the president and mitt romney is very, very, very similar. >> well, soledad, we would disagree with that. the president came to power with a hand outreached for engagement. he kept quiet during the green revolution when those seeking freedom and space with civil society in tehran were being beaten, arbitrarily arrested and even killed. and he's continued to reach out. these sanctions he's now imposing now actually were forced on him by democratic senator menendez and republican senator mark kirk. the white house opposed those. the message in tehran has been one of weakness. and not resolve. bismarck, the great leader in europe in the 19th century once said that diplomacy without the use of force is music without instruments. this administration doesn't have credibility. the result is that the president of iran comes to the united states, and he -- he says that israel should be eliminated. he says that we don't have a right to contain his nuclear breakout. then our president doesn't have the time to meet with our best ally in the region, bibi netanyah

moderate tone. i am elated by it, carol. it happens on both sides of the aisle. we're seeing a multi-dimensional mitt romney. we had seen the businessman, the fix-up artist. we had not seen the guy, the father, the human, the friend. we're seeing a will the more of that. it's helping. he had to do it. he had a huge gap. my question is, what took you so long? they're a great influence on him. we've known, we've heard that ann range of motiomney is calle stabilizer, very close family, close couple. the more of this mitt we see the better. conservatives will be fine with it and are fine with it. at his stump events you're seeing thousands and thousands and thousands of people. that's the base that's showing up. look, if we win, if we can win, we don't care if it's the moderate or conservative, which one it is. we want mitt romney. we don't want president obama reelected. >> wait. i thought things were shifting, at least some conservative analysts were saying it's shifting, like tess no longer republican voters just want to vote against obama, now they're really starting to like mitt rom

what they do over the next several days with both the vice presidential debate coming up and the second presidential debate coming up. one of the thing that is the romney campaign has miscalculated is their definition of presidential -- they have seen this as aggressive and showing strong and might where presidential also means having temperance. having poise and having patience. that's what you saw previously not being applied with the benghazi situation before. let's see if they do it now because this is one of the first times last wednesday that governor romney looked presidential at a time where president obama did not. now, with these issues and the new details coming out, it looks even worse for the administration. and if governor romney and his campaign can take a step back d look presidential in a more holistic way, not only show the strengths in some of the tough talk they have been doing, but show poise and temperature rans with their approach as the details come out, i think it can play well for them and can go very well for them going into the second debate. >> that's intere
